Accuracy you can check

Legal AI that does not make up cases.

The best-known failure of AI in legal work is the confident citation of a case that does not exist. Courts in Australia and overseas have criticised practitioners for relying on them. AI Legal Toolbox is built so that cannot reach you unmarked.

The rule

Nova may only give you a case name, a citation, a section number or a regulation number if it appears in a source in front of her:

  • what you typed to her,
  • the email or document you are working on,
  • data fetched from your systems, such as a Smokeball matter,
  • your firm library.

Not her memory, however confident. Where she has no source, she names the Act by its title and jurisdiction and tells you what to check.

The check behind the rule

A rule an AI is asked to follow is not the same as a guarantee, so every answer is also checked by software before you see it. Each case name, citation and section reference in the answer is compared with the sources above. Anything that cannot be found there is removed and replaced with [case not verified] or [section not verified], and the answer ends with a warning that a reference was left out.

Drafted replies get the same check before they reach your drafts folder.

Kept

A case that appears in your uploaded precedent or checklist is quoted, with the document it came from.

Removed

A case recalled from training data, with no source, is taken out and marked before you read it.

Flagged

The answer tells you something was left out, so you know to check rather than assume.

Your firm library makes your authorities usable

Upload the precedents, standard clauses, cases, legislation extracts and checklists your practice relies on. Nova searches them on every question and answers from them first. Because they are your documents, the authorities in them can be quoted.

Library documents are encrypted with a key unique to each account, kept in private storage, and searchable only by the person who uploaded them. Deleting a document removes the file, its text and its search index.

Questions practitioners ask

Does this mean every case Nova quotes is good law?

No. The check confirms that a reference came from a source you provided, not that the source is correct or current. Check any authority in your usual research service before you rely on it.

What if I ask her to give me a case from memory anyway?

She declines, and if a reference still appears in her answer it is removed and marked before you see it.

Can I add our own cases and precedents?

Yes. Upload them to the firm library in the Tools tab. PDF, Word and text files are supported.

Who can see what we upload?

Only the practitioner who uploaded it. Each account's library is encrypted with its own key and searched separately.
